New Yorkers now have free access to 3,00,000 E-Books
There’s good news for all the e-bookworms out there. The New York Public Library (NYPL) released an app. That’s right, it’s called SimpleE that gives NYPL cardholders the ability to browse, borrow, and read more than 3,00,000 e-books from the Library’s collections in just a few easy steps. It is now easier than ever to take the Library with you, whether you’re at home, on your commute. You can download the initial release of SimplyE for iPhone/iPad or Android, log in with your NYPL card barcode and PIN, and start reading.
New York Public Library (NYPL) Released an App
E-book nerds, rejoice! More than 3,00,000 titles are now available for download on your smartphones, for free if you have a New Yark Public Library Card.
“The New York Public Library’s new SimplyE app makes it easy for New Yorkers to enjoy our growing e-book collection,” said NYPL President “Tony Marx” in a press release for the app.
And he added that “We look forward to working with other library systems to bring the app to readers across the country, and to continue our work with publishers and distributors to ensure that library e-content is as accessible to the public as possible.”
If you’re not sure what to read next, SimplyE features recommendations curated by librarians, making it easy to find books that you can access immediately. NYPL working to add additional features for the app in the near future, including a Kindle Fire version, a desktop reader, an mp3 audiobook format, as well as page bookmarking and text annotations.
What’s Ahead for SimplyE (Additional Features)
The New York Public Library will continue to develop SimplyE on an ongoing basis. The following app features are in development for later this year or further in the future:
Kindle Fire versions – Fire HD 10 (2015); Fire HD 8 (2015); Fire (2015); Fire HDX 8.9 (2014); Fire HD 6 (2014)
Localized Language Support (Spanish, Italian, French, German, Russian, Polish, Chinese)
Improvements to accessibility features for users who are blind or have print disabilities
Bookmarking and text annotations
Faster rendering on chapter and page loading
You’ll need a New York Public Library card to use SimplyE. Residents of New York City can apply in person for a New York Public Library card or renew at an NYPL location near you, and residents of New York State who live outside New York City can apply by mail. Learn more about applying for a card.
If you need help using the app, go to More Help in the app or visit ‘gethelp.nypl.org’ to get help from NYPL staff or find answers to your questions, such as resetting your PIN. They will also invite you to provide feedback via the app under More -Help- Report an Issue in the app, which sends a message to Library staff for follow-up.
Apply for a New York Public Library
New York City Residents (within the 5 boroughs) & Non-Residents Who Work Or Attend School in NYC
You must live, work, attend school or pay property tax in NY State in order to qualify for a New York Public Library Card. If you meet the eligibility requirements a library card will be mailed within 4 weeks to the address you provide.
This card will remain active for a limited time of no more than 3 months and must be validated before use. Please wait until you have received your card in the mail before providing
If you do not live, work, attend school or pay property tax in New York State and are visiting the library and seeking temporary cardholder privileges, apply online and validate and pick up your card in person. Privileges will be granted for a period of 3 days or 3 months, depending on the length of your stay.
You may also visit any library location and fill out a paper application form.
You can download and read books in the iOS and Android app, but the New York Public Library is also working on versions for the web and Kindle, according to New York Daily News.
